A quick scan through the leading men’s fashion blogs and trends for 2013 reveals the continuing interest in vintage fashion, both replica and original, along with accessories, eyewear and footwear. And following on from last year’s trend for camouflage print jackets and cargo pants, is a resurgence in utility, military and army surplus gear - indeed in the UK, British designer Nigel Cabourn has made an entire career out of faithfully replicating original designs and shipping them to Tokyo. Lucky then is the dandy-about-Shanghai, who stumbles across No. 3975, an entire store devoted to imported vintage garb and accessories in the back lanes of Shaanxi Nan Lu.
Perhaps of most sartorial interest is the wide range of leather and canvas messenger and military bags, canvas duffles, tripod cases and metal ‘steamer’ trunks as well as handtooled leather belts and goggles. While a gas-mask, combat compass or webbing water flask may not be top of everyone’s accessory list, a handsome, pre-loved leather satchel or Swedish oversized khaki canvas backpack with leather harness-style straps could be just the ticket. The store also plans to stock Swiss military-issue bicycles in the near future, so you can be outfitted and transported all in one. Go, retro!
