When temperatures fall it really is all too easy to reach for the black, charcoal and chocolate wardrobe shades that befit the gloomy, chilly, moody outdoors. But leave it to a Japanese-born designer to inject some much needed winter-time pizzazz into the closets of Shanghai fashionistas. Since 2007, Mayumi Sato has been adding vibrant colours, layered textures, interesting shapes and experimental accessories to seasonal must-haves lists, and Fall/Winter 2013-14 represents yet more of the funky, weather-defying philosophy from the Bunka Fashion College graduate.
From her darling French Concession boutique, Sato’s cashmere wrap cardigans and dresses stand out in festive shades of white and red, while the traditional woolen winter coat gets a makeover in deep and luxurious forest green. Organic silks and vintage kimono off-cuts are repurposed as beautiful signature ‘bonbon’ scarves, edged with contrasting baubles that add instant flair to any ensemble. Look out too for an eye-catching range of patterned silk purses, totes, bonbon hair bands and rings, beaded garlands, scarves, capes and ponchos, ultra-femme dresses, plus homeware spanning cushions, blankets and bath linens. And even if the blustery wind and rain is keeping you indoors – fret not! Sato’s nifty e-boutiques means you get the fab, fun stash delivered directly to your door. Easy!
