Sassy Spain-meets-Shang Style
If ever there were a label embodiment of the adjectival phrase ‘power clashing’, Celia B. would be it. The eponymous brainchild of Spanish-born, Shanghai-based designer Celia Bernado, this up-and-coming womenswear and accessories brand is a riot of vibrant colours, playful designs, bold patterns layered on even bolder patterns, juxtaposed materials and textures, and ethnic influences from around the globe – and unsurprisingly the finished product is a fun and flirty eyeful to behold.
Though the Celia B. brand is still in its infancy, Bernado’s fashion design pedigree is indisputable: she had a decade’s worth of experience under her belt with fashion houses Zara and ASOBIO, but, tired of fulfilling someone else’s mandate and vision, she struck out on her own. Rather than setting up shop in her homeland, she opted to establish herself in one of the largest and fastest growing retail economies in the world, and now with a growing Chinese clientele and stylists knocking on her door, Bernado’s ruffled Amber skirts, embroidered Kamara dresses, cat’s eye Manila tops, crochet-embellished Zahara clutches, and chunky woven Sapa necklaces are gaining a city and nation-wide rep to be reckoned with. Sassy, confident, extrovert stylistas, listen up – this is your next ‘It’ label.
