Springtime Scents

5 Fabulous Fragrances

There’s never an inopportune moment for a new fragrance, but there’s something about the New Year that makes us feel more inclined to change. And as winter eases into warmer, sun-dappled days, it’s the perfect time to spritz on a new scent – whether you like it spicy and woody or fresh and fruity, skip the mass-market bottles for a fabulously luxurious fragrance. Below, five of our favourite new florals for springing into the season…

Boutonnière No. 7 – Arquiste by Carlos Huber (M)
Late last year, luxury perfumer Carlos Huber introduced Boutonnière No. 7, the sumptuous seventh scent in his exclusive repertoire. Inspired by the ‘Opera Flower’, the fragrance is reminiscent of the gardenia boutonnieres which were worn on black-tie lapels throughout the Belle Époque, and which today represent Huber’s idea of the masculine essence, with key notes of gardenia, lavender, and bergamot.

Jour d’Hermès – Hermès (W)
Calling to mind a lush floral bouquet, the new Hermès scent does what the bottle says, capturing a springtime day. The latest in the collection from in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, Jour d’Hermès features top notes of citrus like a squeeze of grapefruit, a heart of mixed florals including jasmine and lily of the valley, and a woody, musky base – a delightfully lush and lightweight pick to wear into the season.

Santal Majuscule – Serge Lutens (M/W)
Renowned French scent-master Serge Lutens is no stranger to sandalwood, having created both Santal de Mysore and Santal Blanc, but with his latest concoction he achieves a perfectly balanced smell that also incorporates playful notes of rosewood and cocoa. The sultry, toasty aroma isn’t gender-specific, making this an exciting and uniquely wearable scent for wood lovers.

L’Eau du Trente-Quatre – Diptyque (M/W)
Following the 2011 release of Diptyque’s 34 Boulevard de Saint-Germain is this season’s fresh new iteration, L’Eau du Trente-Quatre. Inspired by both the French house’s flagship address and its flagship scent L’Eau, Trente-Quatre interprets and aims to recreate the aura of the Parisian boutique with an intoxicating combination of Egyptian geranium, tuberose, cedarwood and patchouli.

Bullion – Byredo (M/W)
Inspired by the scents, sights, and tastes from his myriad visits to the Middle East, Byredo founder and CEO Ben Gorham created this limited edition fragrance as a tribute. A heady and exotic mix of osmanthus and magnolia, pink pepper and dark woods, plus a hint of smoky leather – wear it, and find yourself transported to a faraway bazaar.
