Omar's La Ranita
Throw away your worries, forget the recession and other such depressing realities, it’s time to bring back some old-style glamour to the New York night scene... or at least that’s what Venezuelan bon vivant Omar Hernandez is vying for, and he may have hit the nail on the head with his new private supper club Omar's in Greenwich Village. Adjoining this exclusive space is fine-diner La Ranita with a New American menu in the skilfull hands of vet chef Kenny Cuomo (Per Se, Blue Hill), and open to the public for dinner nightly.
Both are set in a sultry subterranean deco-esque space, with a magnificent, white marble bar and glam mirrored seating area perfect for oiling the cogs pre-supper with seasonally-inspired cocktails such as the Sardinia (gin, blood orange, campari, fennel and a dash of lemon).
On to the main dining room which is lined with supple saddle-brown leather banquettes, a wraparound mural of New York, and plates up hearty two-man ribeyes, salted black cod, crispy frog legs, and sweetbreads with mushroom escabèche. Tucked away beyond that is the old-school members-only den accessed by a separate entrance, with underground solarium, wine cellar and fireplace lounge where guests are treated to the occasional ‘spontaneous tasting menu’. Glamourous, indeed!
