Green and Glam
With hyper-themed watering holes popping up every other week in most major cities, it’s rather refreshing to come across a simple new offering touting itself as nothing more than a laid-back neighbourhood bar. Rogue & Canon is the handiwork of Johnny Swet and Larry Poston, both well known in the industry for their previous project together Jimmy, as well as stints at Pastis and Freemans, and The Waverly Inn respectively.
In a clean and funky interior of polished dark-wood furniture, pressed tin ceilings, glowing amber backlighting and colourful modern artwork, Swet and Poston offer up a classic-meets-mod menu of Old and New World wines, draft and bottle beers including Founders Breakfast Stout, Two Brothers Bitter End Pale Ale and Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, as well as 14 artisanal cocktails like the Dirty Gibson, a savoury blend of gin, dry vermouth, brine, celery bitters and house-pickled pearl onions. The food program is similarly juxtaposed, with conventional small and large plates like devilled eggs, Welsh rarebit, fish and chips and burgers alongside more inventive dishes such as cavatelli with lamb sugo, caramelised cippolini onions and whipped ricotta, and spicy Hangover Lo Mein noodles. Faff, fuss and pretension-free, it’s high time you go Rogue!
