For Old Time's Sake
Prizmic & Brill
Manila is both a furniture and fashion design hub, and one of its longest standing names is that of Prizmic & Brill, founded by best friends Matthew Sven Brill and Vinko Mario Prizmic in 1986, and which today remains one of the most prestigious brands in the archipelago.
Having designed for legendary interior guru Anouska Hempel at Blakes Hotels as well as the Soneva resorts, the duo also shows each year at the bi-annual Manila FAME (they will be showing their wares next week at Design Philippines 2013, from March 14-17 at the SMX Convention Center).
If you can’t catch them at FAME, note that P&B also has a retail flagship in Makati City that’s first stop for truly unique homewares – from the study to kitchen, and dining to bedroom – with a classic, colonial feel reminiscent of a bygone era.
Proudly touting their Old World craftsmanship, P&B’s collection is in its entirety handcrafted in the San Fernando showroom using traditional methods and materials like hand-woven natural fibres, hand-forged brass, recycled hardwood and embossed vegetable tanned hides. Hardware and fittings are exact repros from the late C.19th and early C.20th, and as a result, their works are rightly marketed as period designer pieces – think coffee table trunks, leather director’s chairs, portable bar trolleys, sterling hip flasks and bamboo ceiling fans.
