Pinto Art Museum & Silangan Gardens
When the hustle and bustle of the city proves too much, it’s always nice to know that little more than an hour away there are verdant boltholes to retreat to like Bale Dutung
and Sonya’s Garden
Another good reason for leaving the city behind lies an hour east of Metro Manila, set in 10,000sqm of hilltop land, the peaceful Silangan Gardens in Antipolo are the weekend retreat of neurologist and art patron Dr. Joven Cuanang. And while the chief reason for a visit to Antonio’s Bale Dutong or Sonya’s Garden is the excellent dining, the draw at Silangan is art, in the form of the Pinto Art Museum and its contemporary Philippine collection.
From Wednesday to Sunday the Pinto Art Gallery opens the doors to its two galleries featuring major works by many of the country’s leading artists, including Victor Santos, Antipas Delotav, Rodel Tapaya, and Ruel Caasi. If a particular artist takes your fancy or you’re in the market for local arts and crafts, the appropriately named Gallery Shoppe provides a wide array Filipino artist’s works as well as gifts, stationery, glass, ceramics and art books.
Add into the mix an intimate on-site cafe for cakes and refreshments, and you have culture, shopping, coffee and klatsch all tied up. Get art and about!
