Global Beer Exchange & The Bottle Shop
Disheartened with the limited options available to discerning drinkers in Manila, beer aficionado Jim Araneta was tired of finding only mass-market products on store shelves and bar menus city wide. He solved this problem in 2008 with the launch of his Global Beer Exchange, by importing hundreds of specialty beers from small-batch, craft microbreweries across the United States, Canada, Belgium, Scotland, and Japan.
Just 5 years on, he’s now stocking 117 (and counting) restaurants and bars across the city from Makati to Quezon to Mindanao, all the while securing the GBE’s status as the go-to source for Manila’s burgeoning craft beer scene.
In November 2012, Araneta opened The Bottle Shop, finally giving the 100+ award-winning beers, spirits, and sodas in his inventory a collective home base. A scattering of picnic benches keep the focus on the walls, lined as they are with shelves housing the extensive range from the 13 global breweries with which Araneta has established direct and exclusive relationships.
Fan favourites include Quebec’s Unibroue, Scotland’s BrewDog, and Belgium’s Slaapmutske, while a growing selection of liquor features Junmai Ginjo sake from Japan’s Kuichi Brewery, and Dead Guy Whiskey from the Rogue Brewery in Oregon, USA. Whether you’re looking for a grab-and-go or a place to stop and sip, The Bottle Shop is it.
