Tiki in the City
It’s hard to be a ‘first’ anything in Hong Kong, home as it is to over 7 million diverse residents who seem to have seen and done it all – but lovely Honi Honi has miraculously managed to inject a welcome blast of fresh air.
From partner and cocktail connoisseur Max Traverse, who smartly chose to sidestep the now ubiquitous tapas and speakeasy-style offerings for something less familiar, Honi Honi is the city’s first (and thus far only) Tiki cocktail lounge, offering a funky top-to-toe Polynesian experience, with both island aesthetic and the menu to match.
It appears no detail has been overlooked here – inside, the walls are lined with bamboo, and sitting at the bar evokes the feeling of a seaside shack; while outside on the terrace, the candlelit atmosphere of patterned sofas and lush greenery seems a world away from the Central cityscape just beyond.
On the menu, classic cocktails like Mai Tais and Pina Coladas are deftly dealt with, there is an exhaustive selection of rums, including the house special homemade infused varieties, plus a decidedly worth-a-visit, rum-focused list of Traverse’s own concoctions (we particularly like the Lady Bird with Pampero Blanco Rum, Angostura Orange bitters, fresh guava juice and strawberries). It’s a Tiki treat!
