For those in need of a quick island getaway but unable to get wheels up, there’s a palm-shaded chair waiting for you at Havana Bar. A little slice of Cuba tucked away amidst the Central skyscrapers, it’s where a cosy vintage interior and spacious, leafy outdoor terrace complete the Caribbean-inspired picture.
There’s Spanish writing on the walls and decorative shutters imported from the isles, although these are far from the only things helping to transport you to a sun-kissed peninsula a few thousand miles away.
Rum is the specialty, and the bar heaves with the weight of the most extensive selection in the city. There are fine sipping rums from all over the Caribbean, including the rare 12-year-old single cask St. Nicholas Abby from Barbados, and a lengthy list of tropical rum-based cocktails like classic Mai Tai and Hemingway’s Daiquiri (with double the rum, grapefruit juice, and maraschino liqueur).
The house variety of mojitos includes the Very Berry with fresh berries and Chambord raspberry liqueur, or Luxury with aged rum and topped with champagne, but all are perfected with house-grown mint. There’s no need to leave the oasis for dinner either, as the menu of satisfying tapas includes Caribbean favourites like marinated octopus and sweet and sour tiger prawns.
