A Temple of Learning Comes to Causeway Bay
In a world where the global book market is diminishing at a frightening pace, it’s heartening, if not wholly surprising to find Taiwan’s bookstore titan and cultural phenomenon Eslite opening what’s hailed as Hong Kong’s largest bookstore. The enormous space encompasses three floors and 41,000 square feet of the much-hyped new Causeway Bay super mall Hysan Place, and if opening week crowds offer any indication, it’s that this first overseas outpost is going to be a runaway success for the brand.
With more than 230,000 multi-language books lining the shelves, and a subject range running the gamut from the world’s bestsellers and classics to the esoteric and obscure, the brand’s printed offerings are sans pareil. But unlike other bookstores, Eslite goes much further, positioning itself firmly as a learning and lifestyle destination rather than purely a bookseller, complete with café and in-store mini-shops woven throughout the space stocking stationery, music, gadgets, design and green products like Yuan Organic Soaps, as well as an in-store exhibition ‘Forum’ slated to host a slew of events and activities throughout the year.
The new store will adhere to the chain’s signature 24-hour opening times from Thursdays-Saturdays, for the first four weeks at least, so whether you’re an avid reader, pop culture connoisseur, or plain old insomniac, Eslite is without question one to bookmark.
