Clash of the Tapas Titans
In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s a battle for Hong Kong being staged at present by some of the world’s top guns of tapas. Joining Vi Cool’s Sergi Arola and 22 Ships’ Jason Atherton in the fray are owners Yann de Rochefort, Christopher Mark, Syed Asim Hussain and head chef David Izquierdo, whose new Boqueria outpost opened in Hong Kong just last month to a ready-and-waiting crowd of totally spoiled Spanish cuisine lovers.
Like its New York City, Flatiron and Soho district forerunners, Boqueria Hong Kong pays homage to the Barcelona market from which it takes its name both off the plate and on, with Moorish-tiles, rich woods, scrawled blackboards, and hanging legs of cured meat adorning the relaxed LKF Tower space.
Traditional favourites such as patatas bravas (crispy potatoes with salsa and aioli), albondigas (lamb meatballs) and the famed Boqueria paella (seafood rice) headline the tapas menu, while myriad cheeses, spiced sausages, hams, and a deliciously crisp suckling pig round out the meat and cheese list.
With chocolate churros to finish, plus house sangria, imported beers like Estrella and an extensive selection of wines from boutique producers packed in the all-too-tempting arsenal, this is one Catalan contender to be reckoned with. Hey Sergi, Jason – watch out!
