First launched back in 2007, ArtHK has grown rapidly over its five successful editions to become one of the world’s leading art fairs and the most important art platform in Asia.
Newly monikered Art Basel (having been acquired by the art event group that was founded in Switzerland in 1970 before spreading to Miami), this globally-recognised event for modern and contemporary art will showcase the work of more than 3,000 international creatives with a prestigious four-day lineup of 245 galleries from 35 countries (half from Asia-Pacific), including 26 from Hong Kong.
Broken down into four sectors, the event begins with displays of paintings, sculptures and photography by 170 leading spaces such as Dirimart from Istanbul and Beijing’s Soka Art Center in a section called Galleries. Following this, the curatorial projects of 47 Asian galleries (including Jakarta’s Entang Wiharso and Blindspot Gallery from HK) are presented in the Insights sector, before the Discoveries feature of up-and-coming duo and solo projects by Wei Chen of Shanghai and Francesca DiMattio of London, among others.
Finally, browse the closing exhibit’s (Encounters) large-scale installations designed by Yuko Hasegawa, Chief Curator of Tokyo’s Museum of Contemporary Art, then beeline back to the Peninsula for the Felix restaurant’s Sweet Canvas dessert buffet which invites guests to create edible paintings from crispy chocolate balls, Tagada strawberry candy, granola crumble and more. Art and dessert?! Book ahead.
