When Dov Charney established his T-shirt manufacturing and wholesale business in 1989, little could he have known that in just over a decade’s time the company would have not only entered the competitive US retail market, but also gone on to rank as one of the 500 fastest going companies in the country, becoming a bonafide household name in the process.
Fans of American Apparel might also be surprised to learn of the brand’s humble beginnings, especially given that today the company is listed on the American Stock Exchange, and has more than 200 stores across the globe, not to mention a brand new shop-in-shop presence in Hong Kong.
Famed for their basic men’s and women’s fashion with a modern, sporty edge, bold block-colour palette and wallet-friendly price points, American Apparel is the latest in a string of High Street openings to hit Hong Kong, including COS and Topshop
. Following the success of their pop-up store last summer, the label returns to LAB Concept department store in Admiralty in a dedicated, permanent, 1,500 sq ft space packed with basic and fashion garments, footwear, swimwear and limited-edition Asian market-specific products. From wholesale to mega-sales and all the way to HK, Charney and his T-shirts have sure come a long way.
