The Doughnut Vault
In the culinary paradise that is Chicago, there’s something to be said for an establishment that has always – truly, always – got a line around the block. It’s a testament to the smashing success of The Doughnut Vault, a hole-in-the wall on Chicago’s North Side that’s tiny in square footage but huge in flavour and fanbase. Since it opened in April 2011, it has been serving hundreds of handmade doughnuts to hordes of busy locals every day, from the minute its doors open at 8:30am (9:30 Saturday) to the quite devastating moment that the doughnuts sell out.
The doughnuts are handmade on the premises each morning, with flavours that range from classics, like buttermilk old-fashioned and gingerbread stack, to more inventive varieties like roasted almond glazed, red velvet, or the special occasion ‘Birthday Cake’ (with sprinkles). If you’re planning to try your luck, make sure to visit their website and check their Twitter page beforehand, as they provide up-to-the-minute information and daily specials, like ‘Out of strawberry jelly-filled, one dozen buttermilk left’, and ‘80+ people in line, but all flavours still here!’
The surest way to leave with a dozen doughnuts safely in hand? Go early.
