Chicago’s obsession with all things doughnut is well-documented, with The Loop’s Doughnut Vault boasting daily round-the-block queues and Fulton Market’s Glazed and Infused offering some of the biggest, best bites in town… so it’s no surprise that new Lakeview arrival City Dough has its eye set on the prize with signature cake doughnuts headlining the all-day, all-American menu. From Emanuel Grivas, a native New Yorker making his Windy City debut, City Dough is outfitted like a classic diner – red stools lining the counter, ceiling fans and canteen tables – but despite appearances, you’ll not find any greasy spoon diner fare on the menu here.
Instead, the breakfast menu features (in addition to the full range of classic doughnut flavours) specialties like breakfast tacos with barbecued pork and grilled steak, eggs Palermo with Italian sausage, shrimp and basil, plus sweet treats like the roasted apple French toast with vanilla caramel sauce and whipped mascarpone. In the next few weeks they’ll roll out a dinner menu, but for now savoury eats like shredded duck tacos with hoisin and cilantro, steak frites and pulled pork sloppy joes can be enjoyed all day, along with other dough-based delights like brioche croutons in roasted tomato soup, and house fettucini with roasted artichokes, mushrooms, and peas. Dough in peace!
