Seafood in SaMo
One of Los Angeles’ most venerable Downtown seafood institutions, the Water Grill, was earlier this year given a complete overhaul by owner Sam King, its first since service began more than 20 years ago. But it seems that once King began, he didn’t want to stop: July saw the opening of the second branch of the multi-million dollar Water Grill, this one with prime ocean frontage in Santa Monica beach, making for an even better perch to enjoy some of the city’s best catch, prepared to perfection under chef Damon Gordon’s direction.
If you can tear your eyes away from the rustic-glam decor, with its high wooden beams, generous Chesterfield-style leather booths, and ocean-view windows, you’ll immediately be drawn next to the impressive copper-topped raw bar, featuring a veritable crushed ice catwalk of crustaceans like periwinkles, sea urchins and oysters shucked freshly to order. The cooked food section of the menu lists the all-American seafood classics, from hearty New England clam chowder to wild Maryland jumbo soft shell blue crab, from char-grilled Santa Barbara spot prawns to steamed live Maine lobster. The rolling waves beyond, a must-try salted caramel bread pudding, extensive wine list, and 30+ beers seal the deal – this is one Santa Monica standout!
