Hollywood Bowl Season
As Hollywood burgeoned at the turn of the C.20th from a small dusty township of 5000 souls in 1910, to a movie boom town community of 50,000 by 1920, it became clear that an entertainment and cultural hub was urgently needed, and the amphitheatre-shaped Daisy Dell in close-by Bolton Canyon proved to be the perfect spot. Starting with a simple timber and canvas stage with wooden bleachers, it wasn’t long before the iconic shell-shaped auditorium took shape.
Now, over 90 years and multiple iterations later (courtesy of luminaries as diverse as Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry) the greatly beloved Hollywood Bowl opens its 2013 season this month.
June 22nd sees Aerosmith, Patti Austin and John Legend take to the stage complete with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and a fireworks extravaganza, followed the next evening by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell.
Other highlights from the schedule include Josh Groban with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (July 2nd-4th), Michael Tilson Thomas conducting Mahler’s Symphony No.2 ‘Resurrection’ (July 9th), Broadway star and Glee alum Kristin Chenoweth (August 23rd-24th), as well as the ‘Maestro of the Movies’ John Williams (August 30th-31st).
And if you want more insight into the history and glitter, don’t miss the Hollywood Bowl Museum, open every night before the concerts and daily all year round. Strike up the band!
