Upping the LA Ante
Men of Los Angeles (and women too), rejoice - not only is there a new shopportunity in town, but it comes complete with men’s fashion, furniture, accessories, home and lifestyle goods, plus an in-house design team, and wait for it, motorcycles.
The fission-hot list of labels housed in this spacious, 2,500sq ft warehouse-like retail space is the brainchild of British expat Amaryllis Knight, a landscape and interiors designer and ex-midwife.
With a matching amount of space behind the shop floor given over to custom-designed furniture and interior projects as well as bespoke-built motorbikes courtesy of Knight’s boyfriend, Altai effortlessly ups the ante on LA retail cool.
Heading the men’s apparel labels with items ranging from blazers to underwear are Casely-Hayford, Sunspel and AMI, as well as Raf Simons, Tim Coppens and Christophe Lemaire (these last three exclusive in LA to Altai).
In addition to small luxury goods like Dunhill lighters, Pickett backgammon sets and Cutler and Gross sunglasses, are Benjamin Hubert marble lights, Hansen Family coffee tables, designs from the origami-like Issey Miyake and Artemide lighting collaboration, as well as contemporary tents from FieldCandy.
And of course, then there are the motorbikes... With vintage bikes going for anywhere up to USD600,000 it might be more economic to stick to the fashion for the time being, but dreaming is always free.
