With Baz Luhrmann’s blockbuster take on the classic Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby lighting up the box office this year, and everything from art to fashion to music taking a champagne-drenched sojourn down nostalgia lane, there’s never been a more on-trend time to go vintage. Step forward then Bootsy Bellows, the vaudeville-esque nightspot from h.wood group’s Brian Toll and John Terzian, Darren Dzienciol of The Beverly and Trousdale fame, and actor David Arquette, that has since its dazzling debut had all of hipster Hollywood clamouring to get beyond the velvet rope.
Inspired by and named for Arquette’s burlesque-dancer mother, BB channels gilded supper club looks in its main and VIP rooms, with tufted walls and a glittering stage playing host to burlesque dancers, some very risqué puppets, musicians and DJs in the former, and rose-coloured banquettes, black and white flooring, gilt mirrors, retro magazine art and a baby grand piano in the latter. Given this is Hollywood, the décor is of course heavily accented by the clientele, and with A-listers and industry types standing shoulder to shoulder most nights, BB makes a sparkly estate gem indeed. Book ahead to attend the 3-course Dinner Theatre night held each Thursday, or have your concierge get you on the list, then dress up, and up some more – it takes more than a smile to get you into this party.
