Despite a robust emerging fashion scene and boutique stockists like Dong Liang and Brand New China flying the flag for Chinese fashion with gusto, it can still be hard to get your hands on locally-made stylish threads in Beijing. However, the city’s prestigious Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT) is set to change all of that with Tu Cheng, an inspired 480 sqm concept store based on their Chaoyang campus which will serve not only as a shopping destination, but as a launchpad for local talent.
The expansive glass-fronted space is fitted out with minimalist white walls and vintage accent pieces to backdrop designs hailing from students and teachers alike, as well as local independent designers (namely Chu Yan, Yan Jie, Wang Feng Chen, and Song Yi, to name a few). Of course, the main attraction is the selection of clothing on offer – including couture womenswear and an atelier for men’s tailored suits – and accessories like custom leather shoes, ethnic-inspired bags, and contemporary baubles. A clear sign that Tu Cheng started as they mean to go on, Vogue China editor Angela Cheung and designer Victoria Beckham hosted the store’s opening in June, and the venue is now set to host fashion shows, talks and round tables too. Fancy!
