The Hutong's Sketch Tour
In a peaceful, secluded, traditional courtyard complex northeast of the Forbidden City hides one of the city’s most prolific and buzzing cultural hubs, ‘The Hutong’, Beijing’s culture exchange centre which has proven to be a welcome repository of knowledge and experience for the city’s many expats and foreigners as well as interested locals. The perfect venue for private events, The Hutong also comprises a ‘creative’ kitchen big enough to accommodate 15 for cooking demonstrations and classes, as well as a rooftop terrace and large multipurpose space for everything from qi gong, dance workshops, yoga and wine tastings.
With a wide-ranging schedule of monthly, weekly and daily events, workshops and happenings spread throughout the year, there’s always something of interest including excursions and tours like those from Laura Worrick and David Elden of WE Design Studios. Their Hutong Sketch Tour is a 3-hour drawing fest that takes in the fast disappearing back streets and alleys of the capital city with historical and cultural commentary supplied by the Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Centre, affording masses of opportunity to put pencil to paper to record the traditional hutong communities and architecture en route.
