Peking Opera Photoshoot @ Fenmo Nongzhuang
Ever fancied yourself an opera singer while belting out an impressive aria in the shower? Well here in Beijing, you can forgo the years of arduous oratory and dance training endured by the average Peking Opera performer and settle for instant gratification at the Regalia Makeup Studio (Fenmo Nongzhuang). Run by opera fanatics Tie Bing and Zhang Lu in a space modelled after a traditional theatre, FN employs a team of makeup artists who masterfully transform stage hopefuls into fully fledged Jue’er in just a couple of hours with the help of full maquillage, authentic costumes, and an array of painted backdrops.
The painstaking layering of traditional white, purple, pink and red cosmetics is made all the more entertaining by the stories and tidbits the makeup artists will regale you with, but the absolute highlight has to be the fun of choosing from rail upon rail of embroidered costumes and matching them with colourful headdresses and accessories. Those with regal aspirations can even plump for the yellow or purple robes, colours that were reserved for the Chinese royal family and nobility. After a few final touches from the photographer, grab some props and get ready to strike a pose for the professional photoshoot. As they say in theatre – break a leg!
