Since opening in 2005 under the direction of gallerist Meg Maggio, Pekin Fine Arts has ascended to the top-tier of the capital’s burgeoning art scene, and garnered international acclaim in the process. Having resided in China for more than 20 years, arts writer and curator Maggio has become renowned for bringing Asia’s most innovative contemporary art across multiple mediums to the forefront, and this winter proves no different with her enormous, Ai Weiwei-designed space exhibiting a joint showing of two of the country’s brightest young conceptual art stars, Chen Shaoxiong and Liu Ding.

Most recognised for his ink work as well as collaborative projects spanning generations, nationalities and mediums in collectives including Big Tall Elephant and Xijingren Men, Chen is unquestionably one of China’s most exciting visual artists, a reputation that was recently cemented with him being named as one of The Rockefeller Foundation’s 2013 Bellagio Creative Arts Fellows. Liu Ding’s architecturally-inspired installations and mixed-medium works have already been exhibited across Asia, Europe and South and North America in his still-fledgling career, and each iteration of his ongoing collaboration with Chen, titled Project without Space, comprises tongue-in-cheek new media and painting intersections of contemporary Chinese identity and western art history and sensibility. Their current offering is showing at Pekin Fine Arts through February 8, 2013.
