With a track record behind him in Hong Kong that encompasses the quiet sophistication of The Dining Room to the opulence of the fabled Toscana, Chef Umberto Bombana finally hit pay dirt in 2010 with the opening of 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana. Just three years later, he’s clocked up not only a sister restaurant in Shanghai, but 3 Michelin stars (the only Italian restaurant outside of Italy to gain the accolade), reached #39 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, and #6 on Asia’s 50 Best. So now, with Hong Kong and Shanghai safely under his belt, the time has come to complete the triumvirate, and this month sees the much anticipated opening of Opera Bombana in Beijing.
Located in chic lifestyle, shopping and dining destination Parkview Green, the lower ground floor space is a vision of modernist plate glass, marble and brick, with patio dining area and mezzanine. Behind the stoves executive chef Marino D’Antonio is joined by consultant master baker Giuliano Pediconi (don’t miss the rye bread with walnuts or corn loaf with capers and sesame seeds), ensuring a constant parade of classic Bombana favourites like braised beef cheek and ravioli with veal, Parma ham and Jerusalem artichoke, alongside lighter options like tagliatelle with sea urchin and zucchini, or marinated scampi with caviar, and orange chantilly. A night at the Opera? Bravo!
