South American Sizzle in Sanlitun

Mosto

When a restaurant is voted “Outstanding Business Lunch,” “Outstanding Wine List,” and “Outstanding Chef” by the good burghers of the city itself, it’s clearly a culinary force to be reckoned with. One of the hottest restaurants in the happening shopping and nightlife district of Sanlitun since its inception, the relaxed and friendly, loft-like Mosto features exposed brickwork and a glassed-in open kitchen focusing the attention firmly where it should be – the food.

And what a feast. Former SALT chef Daniel Urdaneta’s Venezuelan roots begin to show as the menu unfolds with nods to South America and the Mediterranean, as well as to Europe, with signature favourites like yellowfin tuna ceviche, butter-poached lobster with braised figs and saffron, and pan-fried sea bass with cilantro chimichurri (a kind of saucy South American pesto).

The great value, 6-course tasting menu is one of Beijing’s best deals, especially if you factor in the wine pairing option, so it’s little wonder that the restaurant is busy and buzzing for lunch and dinner alike – be sure to book ahead. And isn’t it nice to know that in this day and age, success hasn’t gone to the chefs’ heads?

Instead, Mosto has harnessed its popularity for charitable causes, notably having raised funds for the earthquake victims of Haiti in 2010 and relief efforts in Japan last year. Talented and philanthropic gourmet chefs… reserve that table now!

From Ming to bling in 60 seconds, Beijing’s meteoric rise to world-shattering super-city is as unrelenting as it’s astonishing. Steeped in history and mystique, from its fast disappearing hutongs to its staggering new skyscrapers, the capital of China is without doubt one of the most exciting places to be on the planet.
