Spanish Sizzle
Migas
Rooftop real estate is hard to come by in Beijing, where buildings reach ever skyward, but Migas Restaurant & Bar has scored the jackpot, with an astounding wraparound view of the city from atop Sanlitun’s Nali Patio. Both the terrace and the interior space are pictures of contemporary design – outside, warm yellow lighting, sculptural cacti gardens and egg-shaped cocoon chairs set the scene, while inside, graffitied walls, wood and corrugated iron 360-degree bar, and a variety of coloured chairs provide the backdrop to the equally modern cuisine.
Overseen by Adria-trained executive chef Aitor Olabegoya and delivered by sous chef Jordi Garcia de Alcaraz, the Spanish menu ranges from tapas plates like Galician-style lamb empanadas and Barcelona bomba (meat-stuffed mashed potato balls), to hearty dishes like crunchy suckling pig and braised tuna belly. To go all out, try the traditional Basque Chuleton for two, a 1kg dry-aged ribeye steak served with potatoes, peppers and onions, and as decadent as it is expensive. There are some 40 Spanish wines on the menu to pair, or if you prefer, try a Migas signature cocktail like the ‘Sichuan Sensation’ with Ketel One, fresh lime juice, strawberries and chilli peppers. Spain meets Sichuan!
