Welcome back M+M!
Mesa + Manifesto
When firmly established Shanghai expat favourite Mesa + Manifesto announced its closure in 2011 after a stellar 8-year run, its city-wide fanbase was baffled and lament-filled in equal measure. Finally, almost 2 years later, the M+M team is back, but this time it’s the Chinese capital getting the slick, global drink-and-dine treatment.
The new incarnation follows a similar format to the original, with cool, contemporary Mesa providing the food on the lower floor, and upstairs Manifesto the situ for happening bar-lounge imbibing. Owner/chef Michael Zhao’s penchant for quality ingredients prepared simply and effectively once again typifies Mesa’s culinary offering, with dishes like seared seabass with seafood risotto, crisp pigeon salad and perfectly aged Australian beef tenderloin taking standout honours in the rich wood, washed brick and white-linen dining room. Manned by British mixologist Tiggy Pickard, dim-lit Manifesto blends wood-accented décor and killer cocktails to casually-elegant perfection, with Pickard’s menu featuring a slew of specialties such as gin and blackberry liqueur sweetie The Bramble, and a sinfully tasty Raspberry-Chocolate Martini. Eschewing foam and faff for clean, consistent, and well-executed offerings on the plate and in the glass, Zhao’s manifesto is shaping up to be just as well received the second time around.
