Beijing's Craftiest Couple
Liu+deBiolley Studio
In the multifunctional space that serves as home, studio, showroom and gallery for design power couple Harrison Liu and Jehanne de Biolley, art and objects both historical and modern take centre stage. A look inside, and you’ll soon see why the design cognoscenti seek their services - while souvenirs from their travels adorn the red lacquered furniture and architectural wood beams, original designs from their vast portfolio of work also decorate the interiors of this artistic space, tucked away in what was the library of a traditional Ming Dynasty temple.
In addition to furniture design (Liu’s specialty) and jewellery design (de Biolley’s calling), their work has also encompassed many home renovation and interior design projects such as restorations of Qing and Ming dynasty buildings (including their own!), as well as the design of the award-winning DuGe Courtyard boutique hotel.
Now, fresh from showing at Beijing Design Week in early October, Liu+deBiolley’s exhibitions ‘Craft and Design: A Perspective for the Future’, which throws a spotlight on Ikat weaving as tradition and art form, and ‘Monsters’, highlighting a selection of Liu’s drawings on paper and silk, will be exhibited at the studio until the end of November, complete with special edition handicrafts for sale too.
Should there be anything else (and there almost certainly will be) there that catches your eye, you can also have items custom made. Crafty!
