Put Your Dancing Shoes On
Great Wall Swingout
Swing dancers from far and wide will descend on Beijing next weekend for the sixth annual Great Wall Swingout, an exciting five-day event that sees a busy line-up of live music, dance workshops, and delectable local fare. Though born at the height of the jazz age in the 20s and 30s, swing-style has but recently gained popularity in China, with the GWS helping to move the Mainland scene forward. So whether you’re a seasoned Lindy Hopper or a first-timer eager to put on dancing shoes, there’s a workshop to fit the bill, including the must-see event finale, a celebration held on Sunday the 21st atop the Great Wall.
With special instructors hailing from the USA, Korea, Russia and France, and each specialising in genres from Lindy Hop to Balboa and Charleston, GWS events run the rhythmic spectrum from ‘Korean-style Swingout’ and ‘Spinning & Turning’ for beginners to ‘Classic Lindy Routine’ and ‘Swing Symposium’ for the advanced. In addition to classes, Friday and Saturday’s events include a Roast Peking Duck dinner, live music from the Old Beijing Dixieland band, and after-dark dancing parties at Sanlitun’s Workers Gymnasium. Best save some energy for Sunday, though, where a hike up the wall will be followed by a picnic and afternoon of, well, dancing!
