Leap Of Faith
Great Leap Brewing Co.
Back in 2009, about the only beer you could find in the capital was China’s staple Tsingtao, but that all changed once an artisan alternative arrived in the shape of American expatriate Carl Setzer and Beijing’s first craft brewery.
Until recently hidden away in a Gulou hutong, the Great Leap Brewing Co. has now taken a great leap forward into a shiny new brewpub space spanning two floors in Chaoyang, and while ale may seem like a predominantly western favourite, Setzer prides himself on sourcing ingredients in China and incorporating traditional elements to give his beer a left-field local twist.
The oldest sibling in the GLB family, Pale Ale no.6, is a no-nonsense hoppy delight, while the Honey Ma Gold, spiked with Szechuan peppercorns and organic date honey, resonates with a spiced and rich flavour intensity. If selecting from the 12 ales on tap proves too much, the taster menu offers a chance to sample four varieties of your choice, each in a smaller glass.
Food is a welcome addition to the new premises, and working the flat grill is chef Kin Hong, serving up a range of comfort classics from succulent burgers including the best-selling double cheeseburger, to the Knife and Fork veggie sandwich and garden-fresh Chop salad. Homegrown pijiu never tasted so good!
