Creative And Classic
Beiijng-based whisky aficionados will already be familiar with the name Glen, given the chic, velvety Sanlitun South den has been pouring its more than 50 varieties of single malt very liberally since debuting in 2008. But with a fanbase burgeoning to nearly rockstar levels, owner Daiki Kanetaka decided it was time to diversify, and thus his tucked-away, cocktail-centric spinoff Glen Classic was this February born.
Adjoining established late-nighters Face and La Na Thai in a leafy courtyard behind Worker’s Stadium, Glen Classic melds together two of the traits we love most – handsome looks and precision flavours. Clubby leather sofas and a smouldery palette of browns and blacks are accented with formally clad dressmakers mannequins and sultry dim lighting, altogether giving an air of effortless and rugged elegance. The ‘menu’ consists of two abstract guides, the first detailing the types of cocktails they do best, the second outlining the strongest ‘ingredients’ of offer, including sherry, Calvados, Armagnac, rum, and of course, whisky, available individually or as part of special tasting sets. The free-form menu and myriad house infusions lining the bar (like tomato, rosemary and black pepper vodka) are essentially designed to offer customers a nigh on bespoke libation-crafting service, and the natty list of snacks including charcuterie and rum-smoked salmon will keep you sustained during the creative process. Classic!
