F for Fab!
F by Tribute
Time was when architect and restaurateur Frank Sun’s Hong Kong restaurant Tribute was the talk of the town (not to mention sister diner Bricolage 62), and Hong Kong’s loss is now Beijing’s gain with the late 2012 opening of F by Tribute (the F stands for food), located in the quieter section of Sanlitun South Road. A handsome palette of white on white, the open, clean-lined mezzanine space is the epitome of airy geniality and style, replete with dove grey upholstered chairs, custom-designed tables, crisp napery and black and white photography.
If you’re thinking urban LA loft, you’re spot-on with the fixed-price, 5- or 8-course California-inflected dinner menu serving up a seasonally adjusted and, for the most part, locavore menu of deft and comforting pairings. A simple grilled pork chop comes with a mash of sweet potato with apple and raisin salsa, and Alaskan cod comes butter-poached, while a medallion of Harbin caviar-coated foie gras features a riesling aspic garnished with pomegranate seeds and a pomegranate reduction. At lunch, 2- and 3-course deals are a steal, but go for the wine-paired 8-course dinner menu where the New World-centric wine list is shown to its best advantage with little cost to your pocket. F for fab!
