Despite being situated close to the thronging heart of downtown Beijing and the suited-and-booted CBD, Shuangjing is only now finding its feet as a post-work libation destination with new bars popping up here and there to the occasional fanfare. But one opening that’s really set tongues wagging enthusiastically is a collaboration between two of the city’s most sought-after mixologists – Vincent Guo (Apothecary, Ala House) and Jerry Zheng (Twilight, The Malt) – who each struck out solo to create their very own D&M Bar.
The space itself makes no pretensions with a ‘classic’ finish, from the expansive warm wooden bar, black polished tabletops, and mezzanine with booth seating, to the low-lighting, moody jazz music, and tidy bartenders in dickie bow ties. While the New York-inspired drinks menu maintains this classic vibe with time-honoured cocktails, such as Don Draper favourite the Old-Fashioned (made with orange rind set alight and doused with a healthy glug of their top-shelf whisky), a slick vermouth-heavy Manhattan, and a citrusy-sweet Tom Collins. And if even their collection of over 200 whiskeys can’t tempt you, they also offer a small selection of beers and fruity non-alcoholic beverages. Granted, this bar doesn’t break any boundaries, but who needs bizarre and fanciful concoctions when the classic sips taste oh-so-good?
