Cast your mind back to the fabulous fashion line-up on the red carpet of Cannes Film Festival 2011 and one dress that is sure to resurface is Chinese actress Fan Bingbing’s flowing scarlet dress adorned with plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, and cranes (the birds, not the industrial kind). Well, now Beijing fashionistas can breath a heady sigh of relief because the man behind that dress and many of Fan’s other outrageously glamorous get-ups – Christopher Bu – is bringing his colourful, motiffed, and regal designs to his first bricks-and-mortar boutique.
Although Bu continues to create one-off couture deeply influenced by ancient Chinese culture and intricate dressmaking techniques, his eponymous store is devoted solely to his ready-to-wear line ‘Chris by Christopher Bu’ which he says is inspired by his travels. Well, we can only assume Bu’s been to London recently because his current collection is a psychedelic tribute to all things Brit, such as silky tees, pleated skirts and slinky dresses all emblazoned with images of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen’s Guard and double-decker buses. Rumour has it, his next season will take inspiration from travels to Moscow, so can we expect fur mufflers, full-skirted coats and paisley headscarves? Who knows with Christopher Bu!
