China Tennis Open
Launched in 2004, the China Tennis Open has swiftly become Asia’s premier tennis event, attracting the creme de la creme from the ATP and WTA tours to the National Tennis Center – made famous during the 2008 Olympic Games, and home to the Open since 2009.
And what a venue! The NTC boasts 18 courts (12 match courts including the Lotus, Moon and Show courts) and a total capacity of 32,400 spectators, but without a shadow of a doubt the main Diamond Court stadium is the chief focus for the event, with its retractable roof, state of the art court surface cooling system, and seating for 15,000 sports fans.
For the mens’ events expect fireworks from the likes of the world’s top-seeded Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych; while in the ladies’ games China’s Li Na along with Agnieszka Radwanska, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka will be doing battle with Serena Williams, herself fresh from a fifth US Open title and 17th career Grand Slam singles crown at Flushing Meadows.
With prize money of over USD2.3 million up for grabs, who will take the top honours is anyone’s guess, all that’s for sure is the balls start flying from September 22 and continue through to October 6th. Game, set and match!
