China’s contemporary art scene is unquestionably one of the most flourishing in the world, and many of those who’ve tried to navigate it unassisted would agree that wading through as an outsider can be rather a challenge. Those looking to acquaint themselves with the market will find a great ally then in ChART Contemporary, a Beijing-based, New Yorker-run curatorial lab dedicated to helping novices discover, understand and – as a usual side-effect – fall in love with China’s contemporary artists and their work.
ChART co-directors and sisters Megan and KC Vienna Connolly each caught what they call the ‘China bug’ around a decade ago, and since then the gallerist/art advisor and practicing artist have set about imparting their collective wisdom on keen students through ChART’s tours and exhibitions. The three tours on offer are geared for all from novices to ‘fanatics’ and can include gallery visits, studio meetings with artists, and art events organised especially on behalf of clients. Not content to simply tour the scene, ChART’s Art Lab also helps drive it through their own collaborations with local artists – previous exhibitions have included ChART Home pop-ups in conjunction with Open House Living, and their Sustain Your Ability series of eco-friendly pieces by US and China designers displayed in multiple locations across the city including Capital M.
