A Taqueria with Tequila
Hailed as one of the most hotly-anticipated new arrivals to the Beijing drink-and-dine scene, Cantina Agave is the city’s first branch of Shanghai’s much-loved taqueria and tequileria. A lively taco den serving 100 different types of tequila and an array of spicy and flavoursome Mexican fare, it also boasts a chic interior with backlit bar, wood-panelled walls, hanging lighting and a rainbow of colourful chairs.
The food menu features traditional Tex-Mex dishes like burritos, nachos and enchiladas plus creative appetizers like Pasilla Tortilla Soup (tomato, pepper, shredded chicken, chickpeas, avocado and fried tortillas) and beef tongue chimichangas. Large plates take the form of Fajitas de los Gringos with tequila shrimp or Argentinian-style Carne Asada (grilled filet mignon with chimichurri and stewed black beans), but it’s the specialty tacos that are particularly popular; filled with marinated vegetables and your choice of pork shoulder, braised shredded beef or chorizo and potato, along with refried beans and Spanish rice. Finish up with the indulgent Arroz Con Leche rice pudding with raisins, cinnamon and vanilla, plus a post-prandial sip of the Cantina Cadillac cocktail (Agave’s own tequila blend with Corralejo Blanco, Grand Marnier, dry vermouth and orange juice) or the Mexican Standoff mix of scotch, Benedictine, Corralejo Blanco and Angoustura bitters.
