Coffee and Wallpaper
Caffe What If
Bangkok’s fashion au fait may already know illustrator Pomme Chan as the talent behind gorgeous clothing and homeware label What If, beloved for its silk cushions, floaty kaftans and scarves popping with vibrant colours, animal prints, exotic insects and flowers. Nevertheless, it comes as some surprise that this savvy designer has widened her concept to include gastronomy with the unveiling of Caffé What If, a homey café-cum-décor showroom, offering food and drinks alongside decorative items like wallpaper and fabrics featuring her electrifying trademark motifs.
Coffee brewed from Roots coffee beans (in a range of incarnations that would make even Starbucks positively green) marries well with fresh pastries, strawberry cheesecake and decadent Vietnamese Marou chocolate bars. Meanwhile, heartier fare includes a selection of warming pots with braised beef, sausages and cross-cut veal shank, to be accompanied by refreshingly offbeat options like black carbon bread with a parmesan-chicken paté; and mizuna, warm-roasted plum, pine nut, feta and rocket salad with a passionfruit vinaigrette. Stiffer sips are also available with cocktails like What If Whatever, a rum, Yakult, lychee and elderflower juice concoction, as well as Hitachino craft beer, prosecco or red wine by the glass. Now, where to find that wallpaper paste?!
