The Circus Bar
Absinthe, the fabled fée verte (green fairy) beloved by C.19th bohemian artists and thinkers, and banned from society for its alleged hallucinatory effects (since disproven), has – along with so many other neglected spirits and liquors of yore – found a whole new audience of drinkers in the C.21st.
Highly alcoholic, packed with botanicals from wordwood to fennel and a host of other herbs lending it the distinctive green tint, the anise-flavoured spirit’s appearance in nightlife-loving Bangkok was really only a matter of time, and it’s well and truly come at none other than new big-top drinkery Circus Bar.
The circus theme permeates everything around – with Barnum & Bailey signage, red and white awnings, and staff uniforms of ringmaster tailcoats, not a stone is left unturned in the quest to lure revelers into the ring. The playful vibe extends to the menu as well, with a list of not only beer, wine, shisha and light snacks, but also an impressive range of absinthe-based concoctions and absinthe brands (including the must-try, rare Vert & Vif, which yields a delightfully spicy citrus flavour).
Choose the classic sugar and water mix, or opt for cocktails like the No.1 with ginger beer and bitters, or the No.7 with rum, chocolate milk, ice cream and Kit Kat. It’s quite clear, from the latter tipple alone, that the circus really has come to town!
