Is it a bar? Is it a restaurant? Is it a gallery? The answer is, yes, to all three, and it’s also a workshop space, cafe and occasional live music venue too.
Reminiscent of an urban retro- utilitarian refectory, the spacious, open-plan ‘warehouse’ sports a laid back blend of wooden-topped communal bench tables, moulded-ply veneer seats, plenty of brick and glass, plus a smattering of potted bamboos, ferns, leather sofas and vintage bric-a-brac – the perfect backdrop for the nostalgia-led DJ selections that range from Britpop back to the 60s.
A bar, of course, stands or falls by its drinks, and the small, but well-crafted list at Moose delivers with a strong, fruitsome Melon Cooler of vodka, triple sec and fresh watermelon, and Cosmic Paradise, a power-packed, sweet-sharp blend of Thai Sangsom rum, roselle juice and lemon juice, along with a decent list of beers and wine.
The comfort classics food menu of cast iron Thai faves like fiery pork laab, sweet, rich Massaman curry with beef, and pork with shrimp paste is augmented with a sprinkling of curve balls like the surprisingly good, salted Scotch Egg with sweet chilli dipping sauce. While nearby Soi Thonglor may be the current darling of the scenester drink and dining set, it’s great to see Ekamai giving them a run for their money. Cut loose to Moose!
