Paris in BKK
Even if you aren’t in the market or the mood for a retail haul, it’s well worth the trip to the 8 Thonglor mall for a bite at the charming little Parisian bistro ensconced within. Opened late last year in an ode to the city’s quintessential café, Calin successfully recreates the casual all-day dining atmosphere with sidewalk patio tables (albeit indoors), an airy interior with polished chequered floors, and an on-site bakery that delivers the buttery aromas wafting insistently from the kitchen doors.
Opened by chef Arpha Seneepakonkai, who spent months travelling around France and sampling regional dishes, Calin features a menu of classic bistro staples, like oeufs en cocotte, croque monsieur, strawberry millefeuille and sole meuniere all prepared the traditional way.
Daily specials focus on freshly France-imported ingredients, which recently have included seasonal white asparagus (here served with parma ham, manchego cheese and poached quail egg), and European langoustines (dished up over a hearty whole wheat pasta). As for the in-house boulangerie, croissants, pain au chocolat and pain aux amandes are all baked daily, and Calin even has house-made preserves (in flavours like strawberry balsamic and orange cinnamon) prettily packaged for you to take home. And for the all-important café au lait, Calin roasts single-origin beans from France’s own Café Richard. Now, if you close your eyes, could you picture yourself in the Tuileries…?
